The RCMP is investigating a pair of "fake gold" jewelry incidents that took place in Airdrie.

The incidents involved people being approached with offers to sell them gold jewelry or trade jewelry for gas money. 

The first incident took place at the Shell Gas Station on East Lake Crescent in Airdrie on December 1 at 6:28 am.

The two male suspects in a dark blue/teal Mazda 6  asked for money to purchase gas for a trip to BC and in exchange, they offered gold jewelry that they claimed was 18 carat.

The gold rings and chain were later examined by a jeweller and they were determined to be fake.  

The men are described as Middle Eastern in descent with thick accents and they claimed to be from Saudi Arabia.  

The second incident took place at around 5:00 pm on December 15,  Three people were approached by two men selling fake gold in a parking lot near Scotiabank and London Drugs in Airdrie.

The pair were driving a blue Kia four-door sedan with an unknown Ontario licence plate.  They claimed to be from Vancouver and said they were heading to Toronto. They proceeded to sell $450 in gold jewelry that was later determined to be fake.

The first man is described as:

  • Approximately 40 years old 
  • Around 5'5" tall, heavyset with short hair 
  • Wearing dark jeans and fancy brown shoes 

The second man is described as:

  • Approximately 40 years old 
  • Around 5'6" tall with a slim build, a beard, and greying black hair
  • Wearing glasses, a bright blue jacket, and was seen smoking 

Corporal Gina Slaney with the Airdrie RCMP says that they are unsure whether the incidents are related and their investigation continues.
