A fundraising and community concert 'Rhythm for Aspens Roots' is being held on Sunday, October 23 from 2-5 pm at St. Andrew's United Church.

Seven month old Aspen Taylor has Type 1, Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Reverend Ray Goodship is organizing the concert in support of little Aspen and her mom Janice Taylor.

Goodship is hoping to raise awareness for the disease which occurs in 1 out of 6,000 to 1 out of 10,000 people.

"It is a degenerative disease although the causes are different it acts on the body the way ALS does on adults. She has continually less mobility and struggling with breathing, most infants with Spinal Muscular Atrophy don't live past two or three."

Goodship, says single mom Janice could benefit from not only financial support but community support as well.

"It is crazy how the expenses pile up when someone is in the hospital, so that is a struggle for sure, there's a lot of expenses and no way to make any money. She is also not from the province originally, most of her family is on the east coast and single mom and just fairly new to Cochrane as well."

Aspen is currently at Alberta Children's Hospital and if strong enough will hopefully travel to Vancouver for potential treatment; while there is no cure for the disease, mom Janice is not giving up hope.

The concert will feature live music, silent auction, and good food. Tickets are $10 and can be picked up at St. Andrew's United Church.

All monies raised from the event go directly to support Janice and Aspen, you can read more on Aspen here.
