Cochrane Hosting Sutter Cup

Two games last night kicked off the Sutter South Cup being hosted by the Cochrane Minor Hockey Association (CMHA).

The tournament brings the entire south division of the Alberta Minor Midget League (AMMHL) to Cochrane and by Sunday it will be known which teams will advance to the provincials.

The Airdrie-Cochrane Avalanche are competing against four other teams in the consolation event and kick off their tournament against the CNHA Canucks at 9 a.m. Thursday morning (Mar. 7) in Totem One.

The top two teams in the consolation round robin advance to the final on Sat. Mar. 9 at 6:45 p.m.

The Avs finished 11th in the regular season after a strong push at the end of the season that saw them win three of their last five games.

Three teams from the tournament advance to the provincials being hosted by Edmonton, Mar. 21-24.

The Sutter Cup has never been held here before and has typically been hosted in such locations as Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Red Deer.

Shelley Javorsky, operations coordinator/ice scheduler, says the association was determined to bring the tournament of ‘AAA” minor midget teams here and were thrilled to win the bid last year.
