On February 8, 2024, an investigation by ALERT, in collaboration with Cochrane RCMP and the Calgary Police Service, led to significant seizures in Cochrane and Calgary. This operation began in December 2023 and was aimed at dismantling suspected drug trafficking networks in the regions. The outcome was a major haul valued at over $80,000, including drugs and a loaded handgun. The seized items included:

  • A loaded handgun, previously reported stolen in a break-in from October 2023.

  • 387 grams of cocaine.

  • 746 grams of methamphetamine.

  • $1,015 in cash.

Sgt. Matt Pumphrey of Cochrane RCMP emphasized the critical need to combat drug trafficking in smaller communities. “Any time you have drug trafficking taking place in a smaller community the subsequent issues related to addiction, violence, and property crimes are going to be amplified. Working together with ALERT, we were able to address the issue in a timely manner and keep our community safe,”

Ten criminal charges were laid against 60-year-old Kenneth Funk, related to drugs and firearms. Following his arrest, Funk was released from custody pending his next court appearance scheduled for March 18, 2024. The firearm seized will undergo forensic analysis and ballistics testing to ascertain its potential involvement in other criminal activities.
