Two years into her figure skating career, Cochrane's Evalea Foley has won her first provincial medal in StarSkate.

Last weekend, she won a bronze for her freestyle performance in U13 Star 5. She was one of four locally trained skaters who advanced to provincials.

"It definitely was a bit stressful," she says, "However, overall, it was just a really fun experience."

"I had a couple problems during the program

however, I just like took a deep breath and remember just to keep going. and it worked out in a favor."

She gave her solo performance in front of seven judges to the song "What a Wonderful World." The song was selected in September by Evalea and her coach Karen Ellison, Cochrane director of StarSkate, and she's been perfecting the performance since.

She's now going to train in competitive juvenile and will be competing in sectionals instead of provincials.

Her first competition is in August and she's beginning her train immediately. She'll be training in Cochrane but the competitions are anywhere from Edmonton to B.C.

This Saturday afternoon (Mar. 23), the Cochrane Figure Skating Club is holding its ice carnival. The theme is Fictional Fantasy and features all members of the club. All four of the solos by the skaters advancing to provincials will be part of the program.
