Kellan Harris-Still has been named the top grade IV piper in Alberta and is anxious to compete at the grade III level.

In only his second year of competition and first year as a grade IV piper, the 14-year-old is making a name for himself in the piping community.

Kellan explains the award is based on aggregate points accumulated through the course of the piping season. You are awarded points for your tunes and the Highland Games you attend.

"If you play all the tunes and score high on them and show up at all the games, then you have a pretty good shot of it," he says.

Still, he admits, he was somewhat surprised to win the award

Kellan attended all five of Alberta's Highland Games in Red Deer, Ellerslie, Sherwood Park, Calgary, and Canmore.

He also competed in the Antigonish (NS) Highland Games with the Foothills Youth Caledonia Pipe Band.

Kellan is a member of the Cochrane Pipe Band and received additional weekly training in Calgary.

Among other events, Kellan was the piper for the Canadian citizenship ceremony held at RancheView School last May.

His top priority right now is preparing for the sold-out Robbie Burns Night of the Cochrane Pipe Band on Jan. 29, 2024.
