A Stoney Nakoda man has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in jail for killing his baby.

Tyriq Lyman Kootenay was charged in 2021 when Mounties discovered the body of a six-month-old girl inside a home.

The now 23-year-old was originally charged with second-degree murder but he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

He was handed a nine and a half year sentence in court this week.

Kootenay has approximately six and a half years remaining on his sentence, with time already served.
