Local Cochranite, Jenna Archer, is preparing to pedal 200 km to raise awareness and funds for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Archer, a survivor, has been training hard since January to compete in the 2016 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Archer says she was diagnosed in 2014 with thyroid cancer.

"I was getting ready to pursue my MBA at Queen's University; I was going for an annual physical check up, when my physician located a lump on my neck. I was sent to do a biopsy and that is when we discovered there were cancer cells within my thyroid."

Archer, not sure of her timeline to see a specialist embarked on her journey to do her MBA at Queens; while in Kingston Archer was diagnosed with 'Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma'.

Over 2015, Archer underwent two surgeries as well as radioactive iodine treatment. Today, Archer is cancer free.

Archer explains the importance of riding this year.

"The importance of the ride for me is celebrating the journey of battling cancer as well as creating awareness for all those who have fought thyroid cancer and are impacted by the disease."

Archer says her particular cancer generally has a high success rate but Archer always seemed to fall into the 'special' category causing her a few set backs. Archer is now 30, and continues to get check ups on a regular basis.

"It took a longtime for my thyroid to stabilize, my calcium levels were also affected, and regular ultrasounds 6 months and a year required to make sure there is no regrowth of tumors in and around my neck."

Archer is biking on a team of 40, known as WBN Cycling, the group is in their final push to raise money.

"We raised about $75,000 and we are hoping to raise $200,000 and we have a few weeks to go."

The group is having a final fundraiser on July 28 at the National Beer Hall on 8th, where $20 minimum gets you food and drink; or you can also donate here.

The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer is in it's 8th year and will see hundreds of riders hit the road for a great cause, The annual bike ride is occurring on August 6 and 7.
