Four Cochrane area rinks have qualified for the provincial 55+ curling championships being hosted at the Cochrane Curling Centre in February.

Eighteen teams were competing in nine divisions at the recent zone qualifier, also hosted in Cochrane.

Among the winners was Team Gary Hawkes, a men's 65+ team from Cochrane and Bearspaw, who are defending provincial champions.

Other Cochrane area rinks advancing to the provincials are:

  • Women's 55+ – Team Bev Buckley, Springbank (lead from Bearspaw, second from Cochrane)
  • Women's 70+ – Team Henrietta Dyck, Cochrane
  • Men's 70+ – Team Doug Campbell, Cochrane

Other winners were:

  • Men's 55+ – Team Dean Schielke, Oilfields CC (located in former Black Diamond)
  • Women's 65+ – Team Cathy Dallas, Oilfields
  • Mixed 55+ – Team Darrin Taylor, Cremona
  • Mixed 65+ – Team Richard Davis, Canmore
  • Open 75+ – Team David Parsons, Oilfields

Winners in seven of the nine categories at provincials have the opportunity to advance to the National 55+ Games next August in Quebec City. The 70+ men's and women's categories do not exist at the national level.

The zone qualifier was chaired by Doug Campbell, director of the Big Country Senior Sports Society (Zone 2).

He's also chairing the provincials.
