A Notice of Motion coming forth from Councillor Jeff Toews could soon see smoking around sports related activities in Cochrane a thing of the past.

Toews has asked administration to bring forward a motion to council in the early New Year which would call for changes to Cochrane's current smoking bylaw, eliminating lighting up 5 metres from any building or land where recreational activities take place.

"Updates to our smoking bylaw are long overdue. There was no provision for e cigarettes. I also think areas where our kids are playing should be smoke free. Kids should not have to walk through a wall of smoke to go into Spray lakes or to walk onto a ball diamond."

The proposed changes Toews says would eliminate smoking on Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre property and all sporting fields in Cochrane.
