In what's been called by many as a polarizing 28-day election campaign, Albertans are heading to the polls today to determine who will lead the province into the future.

Across the province, all voting locations are open today at 9 a.m. and remain open until 8 p.m.

Here in Airdrie-Cochrane, five candidates have stepped forward: Danielle Cameron, Alberta Independence Party; Steve Durrell, NDP; Peter Guthrie, UCP; Matthew Morrisey, FCP; and Len Raincock, Alberta Party.

Election day comes after a record 14,143 people hit the three Airdrie-Cochrane advance polls, 6,880 of them right here in Cochrane. Of those an estimated 12,000 are from the riding while the balance of electors were taking advantage of the new "Vote Anywhere" option.

Where do I vote?

Electors must vote at their assigned location on Election Day.  Voters are reminded to bring their Where-to-Vote cards with them to the polls.  If electors are not registered to vote, identification is required to validate their name and address.

Unlike the advance polls, residents are required to cast their ballots at their designated polling stations on election day. To find your polling station click HERE.

You’re going to enter your address, make sure the location is correct then click find my polling place. The information on your designated polling station will be listed below including the distance and drive time to the station.

A mobile voting unit will also be visiting both the Big Hill Lodge and the Bethany Cochrane.

What do I need when I go to vote?

In order to vote, you must first be on the List of Electors. If you did not register online ahead of the election or if you did not receive a voter information card, you will have to register at the polling place.

You can still vote if you haven’t pre-registered, it will just take a few minutes more as You will need to complete a declaration and provide authorized identification, like a drivers license.

If you are not on the list of electors, you must provide identification proving your name and address to register. You can provide one piece of government-issued ID containing your photograph, your name, and current address (such as your Drivers Licence or Alberta Identification Card)” Elections Alberta explains on its website.

Or, if you cannot provide government-issued ID, you must provide two pieces of authorized ID. Both must have your name. One must have your current physical address.
