It bears reminding every year, to arrive safely at your May long weekend destination.

May 17-23 is road safety week which includes the Victoria Day long weekend.

Alberta RCMP is participating in the safety campaign to ensure that everyone has a safe holiday weekend on provincial roads.

In 2021, Alberta RCMP issued 2,321 traffic safety tickets and took 101 impaired drivers off the road during the May Long. Alberta RCMP will be enforcing sober driving over the Victoria Day long weekend on National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, Saturday, May 21.

Last year, the province was still under the COVID pandemic cloud and travel volume was not up to pre-pandemic numbers. This year could see a marked increase in long weekend travel.

Insp. Chris Romanchych, with Alberta RCMP Traffic Services says, “The driving decisions you make not only impact you but also everyone else you are sharing the road with. So, this long weekend, we encourage motorists to think of others when they get behind the wheel and to choose safe driving behaviours.”

RCMP, Sheriffs, and Peace Officers will be out in full force this May long weekend ensuring that safe driving behaviours are being practiced and looking for impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, occupant restraints, and more.
