Winter and construction!

We have two major seasons in our neck of the woods and one of those is about to largely wrap just up in time for the other to begin.

Construction on the Highway 1A project has concluded for the season and the work completed to date will make for big improvements to the traffic flow on both Highway 1A and Centre Avenue.

While there's a significant amount of work slated for the 2022 construction season, Mayor Jeff Genung is pleased with the progress made so far.

"Cochrane has experienced an unprecedented construction season this year," says Mayor Genung. "From the Highway 1A and Highway 22 utility relocation work, the Station, the new Protective Services Building, and the Highway 1A improvements project – we continue to make significant investment in our community." He goes on to say that as advancements are made on the 1A improvements project, "we are making huge strides to address our traffic needs."

To date, the completed Highway improvements include:

  • Hwy 1A: 2 eastbound lanes heading up the hill
  • Hwy 1A: 2 westbound to southbound left-turn lanes onto Centre Avenue
  • Hwy 1A: 1 westbound through lane
  • Centre Avenue: 2 northbound lanes and 2 southbound lanes between Highway 1A and 2nd Street

Town Officials say that in 2022, drivers can look forward to a new connection to 3rd Street from the Highway 1A and Centre Avenue intersection.

A second westbound lane on 1A and the eastbound merge lane from Centre Avenue to Highway 1A are also part of the plan, and a new retaining wall will be constructed to support the realignment of 4th Avenue to 5th Avenue.

While road work has wrapped for the season, dirt will continue to be hauled off-site as the weather permits.
