Kids aged five -11 across the province can soon roll up their sleeve to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Health Canada made the announcement on Friday morning that Pfizer has officially been approved as the first COVID-19 vaccine for elementary school kids across the country. The statement on their website goes on to say that this step "marks a major milestone in Canada’s fight against COVID-19."

Last month, Pfizer submitted a request for the approval of its mRNA vaccine against COVID to be administered to kids under 12 in a child-sized dose.

Health Canada says that after a thorough scientific review of the evidence they have determined that the benefits of the vaccine for kids in this age group outweigh the risks.

The approved dosage of 10 micrograms for kids aged five to 11 is one-third of the adult dose, and they will require two shots 21 days apart.

The data from Pfizer’s clinical trial in this age group showed a 91 per cent efficacy against COVID-19.

Health Canada is currently also reviewing an application from Moderna for the approval of a COVID-19 vaccine for children aged six to 11.
