Organizers of Green Shirt Day on Apr. 7 are inviting those who have been recipients or donors of tissues and organs to be part of the huge event at the SLS Centre.

Greg Hnatuk, one of the organizers, says because of the pandemic they haven't been able to bring people together who have been involved in organ and tissue donations for about three years.

Working alongside fellow transplant recipient Michelle Hounslow, Hnatuk says they know many people in the community have been involved, and it would be great to see them there.

Besides dropping by to chat, they'll be the opportunity to assist with a series of hourly faceoffs at the six different road hockey fields of play.

"Every hour, we'll stop the action and just have a new faceoff and invite people who would like to join in on the faceoffs that maybe have come from donation background either as a recipient or part of a family that was part of the giving of a donation. We may even expand that to include people who have signed a donor card."

Those wanting more information can contact Greg at greghnat@telus.net or the team at the SLS Centre at recprograms@slsfsc.com.

The giant event is being held from 1 to 5 p.m. Besides road hockey, a fun ball hockey tournament will be raging inside.

Some great door prizes have been provided by some generous sponsors for the event. They'll be plenty of information available and resource people on hand to answer questions or help you sign up as organ and tissue donors.

You can simply drop by to play street hockey free of charge in this family-friendly event, but there is a small fee of $20 per team for ball hockey. Friday, Mar. 31 is the deadline to register for the ball hockey tournament. You can register here.

It's also been confirmed that former NHLer and Olympic medallist Mason Raymond will be there to sign autographs and may even be enticed into grabbing a stick and playing a little road hockey.

Also grabbing their sticks to join the fun are players from the provincial champion Cochrane Chaos and HJHL top contenders Cochrane Generals.

Green Shirt Day was inspired by Logan Boulet, who perished in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash on Apr. 7, 2018. He was an organ and tissue donor and saved six lives. He has been an inspiration to many others to step forward in what's being called the Boulet Effect

We'll have the full recap of what's planned on CochraneNow.com next week.
