The Cochrane Cobras are a fixture of the Rocky View Schools (RVS) football championship game.

The Bert Church Chargers, not so much.

The two top teams of the regular season will be meeting this Saturday at the SLS Legacy Sports Field at 1 p.m. to determine who will win the RVS banner.

Cobras coach Rob McNab had the dig deep into his memory bank to remember the last time to two teams have met for the championship. He estimates it's been close to two decades.

The Cobras punched their ticket into the final after defeating the W. H. Croxford Cavaliers in an Oct. 19 semifinal match up. The Cobras scored two touchdowns per half to come away with a 29-0 win.

Cobras co-head coach Rob McNab didn't like the number of flags or the miscues but is happy with the win.

"We'll take it," he says. "We did some good things on the field, there's no questions. We made mistakes but we rebounded, and we move the ball. Once again penalties are holding us back."

The semifinal was the team's annual pink game in support of breast cancer research. Players wore pink socks and other assorted pink accessories. So did some members of their coaching staff and fans. The game raised $255.

In the other semifinal match-up, the Chargers scored in the final minute of play to pull out a 17-16 win over the Springbank Phoenix.

During the regular season, the undefeated Cobras beat the Chargers, 21-3. The Cobras remain the number one ranked Tier 3 team in the province.

It has been sometime since the Cobras have lost the RVS championship. In 2014, the George McDougall Mustangs stunned them in the title game. That same year, the Cobras went on to win the provincial Tier 3 title.

McNab says the team has been plagued with injuries but fortunately have the depth to find a way to dominate on the scoreboard.

Starters like Dawson Gladue, Aiden Thompson, Fox Bell, Chandler Ball and Owen Woroby have all been riding the sideline in their Cobras jackets.

"We have injuries problems," says McNab. "We're trying to sort that out. You put a guy in and he gets injured. It's just one of the those years where injuries are really affecting us."

McNab isn't taking the Chargers lightly.

"They're a big, strong, physical team, We're going to have to play our best to get anywhere near them. They've turned the corner and are well coached. Physical is the big thing. We're not overly physical at this point."
