Tomorrow on Good Friday (April 19) Christians will walk, sing, and listen to scripture readings that follow the story of the Passion of Christ.

Running for over thirty years, the Walk of the Cross always attracts a large crowd where community members take turns carrying the cross while walking the stations outdoors.

Reverend Ray Goodship of St. Andrew's United Church, says the one thing he loves most about the event is it brings several congregations together. "All the churches in the ministerial work together to bring this event to the folks of Cochrane. It seems to be a tradition that everyone embraces, and looks forward to offering as well as participating in."

All ages are welcome to participate, and Goodship shares what to expect. "We are telling the whole story of the Passion of Jesus Christ. We follow the scripture which tells the story in bits and pieces, and it follows loosely the stations of the cross; The Betrayal, The Trial, Jesus Walking With the Cross, and all those steps. We walk together; we will sing a hymn while we are walking, read scripture that reflects that particular station or that particular movement in the Passion and we will stop in front of certain landmarks as we do that."

Generally bringing together a few hundred people, the event remains fairly consistent from year to year other than subtle changes to the music or landmark stops. The Walk of the Cross is not a new tradition by any stretch, and part of the draw, shares Goodship is being out in the community together and transcends all the boundaries. "We do have a lot more in common in the Christian tradition than differences, even though it seems those differences is how we define ourselves. So much of what we share, we share in common, and certainly, the Easter Story is foundational for all of us. It is just so cool to see us all out and working together and agreeing on values that we cherish; it is very inclusive."

Lastly, Goodship gives credit to the Town of Cochrane, RCMP, and community overall for their support and respect of the overall event.

The Walk of the Cross will begin at 10 a.m. at the Old Town Hall Site located at Second Avenue and Second Street and will wrap up roughly an hour later at the Cochrane Legion Cenotaph where the cross will be erected. On Easter morning, Reverend Goodship will drape the cross with a white cloth which will remain up for the day.
