Cochrane RCMP is advising cyclists and motorists to respect each other as well as the rules of the road.

On Friday (May 4) at roughly 11 am, RCMP responded to a complaint from a motorist who came across three cyclists riding side by side in the driving lane near Township Road 280 crossing Grand Valley Road.

Constable Kary Moore shares the driver honked as she approached the cyclists hoping it would encourage them to move to the side. "She honked once hoping to have the bikes line up in single file on the shoulder; they did not move over and spit in the direction of the vehicle driver."

RCMP are hopeful this story will encourage the cyclists involved in this incident to come forward and contact Constable Agboat to discuss.

Constable Moore says this case is the perfect opportunity to remind both cyclists and motorists of the rules of the road. "Cyclists are required by Rules of the Regulations to ride in a single file behind each other not side by side. They are also required to ride their bikes as far as they can to the right side of the road, on the shoulder, if there is one."

Failing to comply to the rules could see a cyclists wallet feel a little lighter if they are unwilling to ride in a lawful manner. "Failure can result in riders being ticketed and charged. The fines can range anywhere from $78 to $155 for failing to obey."

Respect and sharing of the road go both ways, states Cst. Moore. "Vehicles need to be aware that cyclists and motorbikes are on the road, just pay attention because they are smaller and can be tougher to see. Cyclists should wear high visibility clothing including a safety vest or a bright helmet and have reflectors on their bike."

There are no restrictions where cyclists can ride but they must follow the same rules as motorists on top of bike rules.
