Feedback to the 2017 edition of the Cochrane Cup has been positive and organizers are encouraged by the number of new entries, particularly in the men's open division.

In all, 22 teams participated this year and co-chair Oscar Pacheco believes changes to the format even enhanced what was already a great tournament.

"It was quite enjoyable, especially because of the feedback we got from a lot of teams. They were constantly giving us that positive feedback that the tournament went well and they were looking forward to returning for the next year."

Many of new entries in the men's open division are keeping the Cochrane Cup in mind for next year, too.

"It was the first time for them and they really like it, they really enjoyed it," says Pacheco. "They found it a good level and they saw the possible of participating next year and hopefully taking the first prize."

Emphasis was placed on giving teams value for their registration and most teams were still in the running on day two with the new tournament format, giving them motivation to play their best to the end. Even in the 035 men's division there was a mystery prize up for grabs in the final game between the 5th and 6th place teams.

"The games were fairly competitive; even on the second day it was hard to know who would win. There were teams still qualifying on the second day, that's how competitive it was."

In the end, there were repeat winners in both the men's open and men's 035 events. Sweet Feet defeated Banff FC for the men's open title and the Canmore United came third. Caledonian prevailed over the Lad Squad for gold in the 035 division while the Chinook Blackstairs were third.

In an exciting women's final, RDC Rec Royals upset the undefeated Panthers and the Cochrane Rangers won bronze.

The pace of the tournament allow gave players a chance to relax between games and patronize both food trucks at the field and local businesses, says Pacheco, and their Saturday night social at the Venue Bar and Grill was well attended.

It was Pacheco's first crack at co-chairing the event and found it to be an enjoyable learning experience

"For me it was a learning experience so I'm looking forward to next year, if I have the opportunity, to try and do new and improved things."

Participating in the tournament were: Cochrane Rangers, RDC Rec Royals, Banff FC, Chinooks Blackstairs, Canmore United, Leduc, Valkyries, Panthers, Latin Royals, Rogues, FC Hungary, Olds Olympia, Airdrie, Parkfins, Atletico Ogden, Sweet Feet, Lads and Caledonian FC.
