A win, win, win scenario continues to be conjured at the annual St. Timothy High School's charity hockey game that has just completed its fifth year.

The event continues to foster school and community spirit, raise funds for the Sheldon Coates Child Advocacy Centre and, to the delight of students, signals the beginning of the school's Christmas break.

Mayor Jeff Genung dropped the ceremonial puck.

Founded by former teacher Kevin McLellan, the St. Timothy High School continued the proud this year and attracted a number of special guest skaters, including ex-NHLer Curtis Glencross, Laura Dostaler and Cochrane Generals coach Travis McMillan. Former St. Tim's principal Randy Smith and McLellan were among alumni returning for the event.

It may have been a game of mixed emotions for teachers' coach Andy Macri but he was focused upon projecting his Don Cherry personification on the bench.  Retiring at the end of the school year, Macri wryly said he wanted to go out a winner and keep his undefeated record unscathed. The game tied 2-2 in the early goings he pretended to sweat it out while trying to fire up his troops.

The teachers did, in fact, have an overwhelming victory, but the big winner of the day was from Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre. Teacher Leo Keefer of the organizing committee, says final numbers weren't available but estimated around $4,000 was raised for the centre, something he said surpassed their expectations.

It is largely through these contributions that the event has proven to benefit the advocacy centre. Unlike the past, the raffles and silent auctions both wrapped up at the event after a few weeks of sales in order for people to receive their prizes before Christmas. Previously, some have extended to the end of the school year.

“We could not have done this without the strong support of sponsors, the committee that I work with of teachers who organized the event, the support from the students with all the fundraising that they did and the special guests who made the trip here from a long ways away to be here today," says Keefer. "We appreciate everyone who chipped in to make this a whole community event.”

The buzz of the arena was a testimony to how popular this event has been through the years.

"Everyone was having a really good time out there. The kids always bring smiles and a lot of laughs for the guests and teachers as well. Even the kids in the stands. I looked up and saw them smiling, so I think it was a great success."
