The Cochrane Generals start their 2017-18 regular season with three games on the road.

The Heritage Junior Hockey League announced their schedule on Aug. 2 and the Gens are taking on the Okotoks Bisons in their opening game on Sept. 22 before visiting the Strathmore Wheatland Kings the following evening.

After a Sept. 29 date in Airdrie, they start a five-game home stand against north division teams, first taking on the Ponoka Stampeders on Sept. 30 at Totem One of the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

It's a 37-game schedule that includes 18 home games and 19 on the road. The regular season ends for the Gens in Medicine Hat on Feb.10.

Head coach and general manager Derek Donald says they are working on setting up three to four exhibition games prior to the start of the regular season. That will give the Gens an opportunity to take a closer look at some of their new prospects and they will likely play some of their veterans sparingly during those games.

Prospects and returning players will be hitting the ice for training camp, Sept. 2-3. All players will have four ice sessions during the weekend and each will receive feedback on their play.

"I look at the first weekend, Sept. 2-3, as really the tryout time and then we'll be keeping some guys we think are going to have a chance to make the team over the next couple of weeks, give them some exhibition games and see what they look like in a  game situation," says Donald.

Following the initial weekend, the Gens practice Tuesdays and Thursdays.
