The new aquatic centre continues to open doors for new opportunities for Cochrane youth and the latest is synchronized swimming.

This Saturday, Dec. 2 from 2 to 3 p.m. the Calgary Aquabelles Synchronized Swim Club is hosting a free session for boys and girls, ages 7 to 12, and weekly Friday classes will begin in the New Year.

During the one hour session, they will be introduced to the fundamental synchronized swimming moves, like eggbeater and sculling, in a fun and supportive environment.

The Aquabelles explain this programs offer parents a “safe” way for their child to try this sport before committing to a camp, pre-competitive or competitive program.

Myrna Kruger, a former national team member and longtime Aquabelles instructor, is thrilled to see the Aquabelles offer the sport here. She had tried to do so once before at the Big Hill Leisure Centre but there wasn't enough pool time available.

"Now that we have the new pool and we have the opportunity to have it here it," says Kruger. "So we’re going to be trying it once a week and if it catches on we’ll see if we can get some more pool time. It's pretty exciting."

Her daughter, Adora, will be one of the instructors and the Cochrane youth has been training and competing in synchronized swimming since a young age. Now 17, she was a member of the Junior National Team in the summer and has just returned from Montreal from one in a series of selection camps for the next team.
