The Zone 2 mixed curling team from Cochrane has returned from the 55+ Alberta Winter Games with a bronze medal.

Skip Doug Campbell, third Ingrid Schmidt, second Bob Bleaney and lead Debra Nielsen won bronze in the 55+ age group of the bonspiel held during the games hosted by Cold Lake, AB.

The team played Edmonton, St. Albert and Grande Prairie on their way to the bronze medal, says Campbell.

"We're pleased to have won the bronze among competitors from seven zones throughout the province," says Campbell. “We  also must commend the City of Cold Lake, Bonnyville Municipality and CFB 4 Wings for providing great facilities, hosts, shuttle services, food and entertainment."

Curling was just one of 14 sporting events held between Feb. 28 and Mar. 3.

Alberta 55+ Sports offers many sports, gaming and cultural competitions and activities for mature Albertans throughout the course of the year. It aims to keep those 55 and over physically, mentally and socially active for a fuller and healthier life.

Next up is their summer games being hosted by Medicine Hat, July 4 to 7. Like other sporting activities, it is broken into seven geographical zones, where participants compete to qualify for the provincial games. You can expect these zone qualifiers to begin shortly.

In addition, the Canada 55+ Summer Games are hosted by Kamloops, B.C. in August and already some Cochrane athletes have qualified to participate.
