The Bow Valley Bobcats senior girls basketball team already has two tournament wins under their belt early in the season.

Last weekend, the team won the 3A Rocky Mountain House tournament at the West Central High School, going undefeated in all three games.

The Bobcats dominated Innisfail, 77-10, in their opening game before winning against the host West Central High School, 72-33.

Head coach Kris Nielson says their 55-45 win in the final against Strathmore wasn’t as close as it sounds.

“We were up by as many as 20 in the first half and led by 15 at the half but got into foul trouble in the second half and they hit a 3 and had a steal and layup in the final 15 seconds for the final score,” he explains.

Seven Bobcats finished the game with four fouls.

“We had some adversity which was good for our girls to have at this stage, but the girls kept their composure and hung in there for the win.”

The Bobcats are now 7-0 on the season. Prior to the Rocky Mt. House tournament they won all three games of ther own tournament, then won an exhibition game in Canmore, 54-32, on Dec. 6.

The team opens their Rocky View (RV) season this Wednesday at home against the Bert Church Chargers. Then it’s on to the Cochrane Classic Basketball Tournament, where they face Beaumont in their opening game. Beaumont, just west of Edmonton, was a 3A top 10 team last season.

Nielson says he is looking forward to this weekend’s tournament.

“The Cochrane Classic should give us an idea of where we sit in the provincial 3A standings.”

Cochrane Cobras Win Opener

Meanwhile, the cross-town Cochrane Cobras senior girls won an important RV season opener, Dec. 5.

The Cobras beat the defending champion Chestermere Lakers, 44-38.

The Lakers have been dominated in Rocky View play for several years and the Cobras were a close second last year.

The Cobras are on the road Wednesday night against the Springbank Phoenix.

The Cobras senior boys team lost their season opener to Chestermere 89-80. They host Springbank on Dec. 11.

Bow Valley doesn't have a senior boys team this season.
