It's an annual event where members of the Foothills Art Club can get in their licks... and come out none the worse for wear.

The club's annual ice cream social fall kick off is this Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the St. Andrew's United Church, 128 1St. E. Club executives will be serving up some fine ice cream, courtesy of MacKay's Ice Cream, for club members and those interested in joining

Club president Marty Cochrane says the social, now in its third year, reflects the atmosphere of the club and they don't like to hit their membership with a general meeting right off the bat.

"It should be about fun, it should be about camaraderie and that's what we're aiming for with Foothills Art Club. It's just welcome back to the new year, we have a little ice cream, we get a sponsorship from MacKay's, who are good enough to divvy up about 6-7 litres of ice cream. Everybody gets to meet and talk about how their summer went and it's a bit of fun."Marty Cochrane painted a view of the historic downtown while participating in the artist residency program at the information centre in May 2017. MacKay's Ice Cream was a predominant feature.

While taking part a special artist residency program at the  Cochrane information centre in May 2017 he completed a painting of the historic downtown that featured MacKay's.

"MacKay's seen it. They appreciate our support and we certainly appreciate there's, so for the last two-three years they have been providing the ice cream."

Potential new members are also welcome to come out and learn a bit about the club.

"We want everybody to be encouraged to come out and enjoy themselves and experience art the way it's supposed to be. It's a fun thing."

The Foothills club membership has a wide range of artists, from experienced, to up and coming artists and those who do it for the fun of it.

They have about 47 members and it would be ideal to crest 50.

The club meets weekly at the St. Andrew's United Church on Wednesday nights and hold several special educational sessions, including workshops an critique nights. They also hold a monthly art session at the Beaupre Hall the first weekend of each month from October to May.

The club has an annual fall and spring sale at St. Andrew's. Their fall show is on Oct. 13.
