The Cochrane Softball U16 Strikers are Calgary Minor Softball Association champions after edging the South Bow River Team Two (SBR2) 13-10 at City Finals.

The ladies walked away with gold after a drawn out, two week final due to weather and a double header tie.

Todd Temple, U16 Strikers head coach says the last game of the series against SBR2 was an impressive performance.

"The last game was probably one of the best games they've ever played," he says. "Defensively they were really strong and made a lot of great plays that ended up making a huge difference in us winning that game."

The finals were a long process for the girls, who played two weeks of extra innings against SBR2 in the first game of the series.

"When we played that game they started off 8-0 after two innings, our ladies fought back and tied it up, and then we ended up going into extra innings. Over the course of two weeks we had to keep playing the extra innings because we were tied up, and then we ended up losing by one run, which forced us into one more game."

Temple shares the U16 Strikers had a strong season, boasting a 7-0 record when the team first got fired up in the spring.

He expects the momentum will continue into the next season as well.

"As we go into next season, only two girls move up, so that means there are 10 returning girls on our roster as second year players, so we should be a strong team next year."
