Extreme cold has led to the postponement of tonight's first Share Your Christmas Emergency Responders Parade through the Sunset Ridge neighbourhood. It will instead be held on Dec. 8.

Town councillor Marni Fedeyko, who spearheads the event, says it's just too cold.

"It's going to be really difficult for attendees to be outside and it's really hard on our fire trucks because, of course, there's water in their lines and they're not connecting up to fight a fire," says Fedeyko. "We just had to make the call that it's not great for our vehicles, and certainly not great for attendees to participate tonight."

With the extreme cold expected to ease tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 4, the hope is the parade through Fireside, Heritage Hills and Heartland will go ahead as scheduled from about 5 to 8 p.m.

The parades that originated during COVID have continued annually since. It involves firefighters, police, and EMS, subject to their availability.

"Through the Share Your Christmas Emergency Services Parades, we are hoping that we can get as many people as possible out there to donate gifts, gift cards for everyone in the family as well as nonperishable food items," says Fedeyko. "It's super important at this time of the year. We want to make sure every Cochranite has something to open under the tree this Christmas."

The updated parade schedule is as follows:

  • Dec 3   - Heritage Hills/Heartland/Fireside
  • Dec 6   - Gleneagles/East End/Cochrane Heights/Sunterra
  • Dec 7   - Riverview/Glenbow/Bow Ridge/Meadows/Jumping Pound
