Players on the new Cochrane-Airdrie hockey team are aiming to wreak Havoc in their inaugural season.

Havoc is the name that's been selected for the U16 AA hockey team that will be playing in the newest division of the South Central Alberta Hockey League (SCAHL).

The Jessome Family submitted to the winning name and logo for the team of the Airdire Cochrane Athlete Association (ACAA).

Rob Sutherland, the ACAA board member overseeing the new team, says they received about 15 suggestions in the search for a name.

What the committee particularly appreciated is how this entry represented Airdrie and Cochrane. Emphasis was placed on the 'A' and 'C' in the design, and it gives a tip of the hat to both the AA Bow Valley Timberwolves and Airdrie Lightning.

"At the end of the day, it's how they used the logo and "Havoc" name itself to represent the two main communities, and we thought it fit really well within our organization."

The Jessomes will receive a personalized Havoc jersey showcasing their design.

The Havoc is part of a one-year pilot of Hockey Alberta. Sutherland says he believes the idea is to create a competitive team for players who don't make either to triple-A  AC Avalanche or Bisons.

"We'll see how the one-year trial goes with the league and what sort of competition there is," says Sutherland, "But I think those players that fit in that category will appreciate having a place to play that suits their skill level."

This will be the fourth team under the ACAA umbrella, the others being the minor midget AC Avalanche, major midget Airdrie Bison and AAA Bantam Xtreme.

The team has been told to be prepared to start on schedule but remain flexible if things change. Those selected for the team will start camp with the AC Avalanche.

"They'll all start conditioning camp together and they'll start tryouts together,. Then we'll split off at some point where the coaches agree on, and we'll go from there."

The Havoc will have a modified draw zone similar to that of the association's triple A teams. They'll practice and play games in both Cochrane and Airdrie.

Prior this this, David Chamberlain was named as the head coach. He was previously an assistant coach for the Airdrie CFR Chemicals Bisons U18 AAA team and says he's looking forward to returning to coach an ACAA team.
