For many Cochrane families, cutting down a tree is a tradition that marks the kick-off to the holiday season.

There are several, permitted areas that are a quick drive from Cochrane.

Before you grab your axe and head into the forest, be sure to snag a Personal Use Forest Products Permit (PUFPP) to harvest trees on provincial Crown land within Alberta's forest areas. With this permit, you can collect up to three Christmas trees that are under 8 feet tall.

This permit lasts for 30 days and can only be used in designated areas on Crown land, within Alberta’s forest areas.

Once you have your permit it's time to head out for the perfect tree, here are some tips for finding the right one.

  • Test to see the health of the tree. Pull lightly on the needles: If they stay on then your tree should stay green for the holiday.
  • Don't go too early, most trees will not last longer than three weeks. Even with ample watering.
  • Bring proper tools and clothing.
  • Shake and check tree. Try to make sure you're not bringing in forest critters and/or insects.
  • Don’t forget to yell “TIMBER” as it falls down into the snow.
