The Cochrane Junior Curling Program is now accepting registrations for its fall season that begins shortly.

The program is for youth ages 7 to 17, and all that's required is a helmet and clean pair of shoes. All other equipment is provided, and training will be provided by qualified coaches.

The fall session runs from Oct. 24 until the end of December. Youth can play in one of two one-hour time slots on Sunday afternoons (3 to 4 p.m. or 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.). A second session runs from January to March.

"It's super sociable for the kids," says Karly Macaulay, junior curling program coordinator. "It's a good opportunity for them to try something new with their friends outside of school while being active in the community,"

From there. she says they can help them transition into adult leagues and says it's not uncommon to create friendships that last through the years. She says many who learn to curl at a young age often pick it up again in their adult years.

"It's one of those sports that you can come back to," she says, noting there are people who continue to play into their 80s.

The cost is $60, and every effort is made to keep it both affordable and accessible for families by providing the use of brooms and sliders for beginners.
