There are more Cochrane softball players with medals around their neck after recently competing in the City Championships of the Calgary Minor Softball Association.

The girls softball U12 Lightning had a silver medal finish on June 17 in Division 2A of the City Championships.

Team manager Sasha Pike says the team includes a core of six players who have played together for three years and won a gold medal in the lower Div. 3  last season.

"They're a pretty cohesive unit these six girls and we get some talented other girls thrown into our mix for a roster of 10," says Pike. "They had a great season and it was a great fun for them."

The team finished second in the regular season to Chestermere whom they lost to by one run in the finals and also earlier in the playoffs, again by one run.

"The kids really enjoyed it. They have so much fun, cheering and learning the sport and supporting each other."

Girls softball, like the rest of Cochrane Minor Ball, continues to grow. This season there were almost 80 girls involved with one U10 team, three U12 teams, 2 U14 teams and one U16/19 team.

"It's so great to see this sport is growing and the kids are embracing it."

Many other divisions are wrapping up their play this weekend and early next week.
