Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie believes some fences will have to be mended in the wake of a federal election campaign that sidelined issues of importance to Albertans.

"I'm pretty disappointed with the result," says Guthrie. "I think a lot of people are. The feedback today has been just that. It's disappointing for the west."

He believes tactics used by the Liberals were divisive and have left many worried about the future of the dominion.

"We have a prime minister who decided to make it an east versus west thing. That's not good for unity. I think there's going to be a lot of fence-mending required here."

He says Trudeau needs to remain true to his commitment to proceeding with the twinning of the TransMountain Pipeline (TMX). The Liberals' stance could be impacted should they form a coalition government with the NDP.

"The NDP made it clear they are against any kind of pipeline or resource development. We're hoping that the Liberal government honours and respects the fact that the TMX needs to go through."

He says the government has muddied its constitutional authority.

"There are constitutional issues here. The federal government was going around basically promising the provinces veto power when it clearly states in the constitution it's federal jurisdiction. The federal government has the power to put in pipelines if it's in the nation's interests."

"Making these kinds of promises is certainly not something that we like to see, but the Liberals say they are in favour of TMX so we're going to hold them to it."

While disappointed in the overall results, Guthrie was pleased to see incumbent MP Blake Richards swept into office with over 71 per cent of the vote.

Guthrie hit the campaign trail for Richards and was a highly visible opponent of the Liberal campaign. He produced a series of videos condemning their actions. Also, he voiced concern over changes in the Elections Act, the carbon tax and Bill C-48, the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act.

He intends to make more.

"It was something that I felt was important coming into the election and naturally, I had hoped with a different outcome, but I think it's going to be important to continue to get our message out to not only Albertans but all other provinces. I think it is a good medium to do that and will continue to do so."

"Blake is known as being a hard-working and everyone in the area knows Blake," he says. "In Ottawa, Blake is known and recognized for being a tireless worker. He deserved the win and he's going to continue to be a terrific representative for us."

Guthrie had already struck up a working relationship with Richards before the election. That same connection also exists with Cochrane Mayor Jeff Genung and Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown.

"All levels of government need to work together, municipal, provincial and federal if we want to be successful and get done what constituents are telling us they want."
