Josh Walker and his siblings are organizing a LEGO Building Contest this Saturday (May 18), for a great cause.

The Building Futures 4Friends (BF4F) fundraiser has been in the works for about a month now and the youth are taking a stand to raise awareness and funds for a new kids/teens Mental Health Centre in Calgary being built by the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation.

Besides his mom working for the Alberta Children's Hospital Fundraising Foundation, Walker says his driving force was the sheer amount of cases pertaining to youth/teen mental health. "The mental health rates in Calgary over the past few years have skyrocketed and the number of suicides that go on is just way too much. I think there are about 60,000 different mental health cases across kids and teens in Calgary right now, and the suicide rates have gone up about 50% since 2017."

Wanting to take a stand, an anything goes LEGO building contest will occur in Totem One of Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre this Saturday from 10 to 11:30 in the morning. "The competition is more to just build something. It doesn't matter if it is big, small or anything...it is just building something and bringing it in. It will then be judged by a local youth pastor and the Mayor."

Hoping to see at least 30 entries, Walker says competitors should have the projects slightly disassembled but with the ability to easily reassemble the piece at SLSFSC. "You wait there, it is judged, and the winner will be announced."

To entice entries, a signed hockey stick by Matthew Tkachuk is up for grabs and two tickets to the Flames season opener. Giving thanks to MacKay's for being a sponsor and covering the cost of the arena rental. All proceeds will go directly toward the cause.

LEGO entries are by donation only and Walker and his siblings plan to do it again in the future.
