Youth in Cochrane are able to get out and try rugby without the commitment.

Francine Horton, Bow Valley Rugby Club, Administrator, says over the next couple of weeks those under 15 are invited to try out the sport and see if they like it.

"We're offering the next couple weeks, we're saying kids come on and have a go for free. Bow Valley Rugby Club are asking kids to come and try the sport for the last two Monday's of the season. Under 11s between 6-7 pm, Monday, Mitford Ponds, under 13 and under 15s 7- 8:30 pm. No charge. Just come with a pair of runners and dressed for the weather."

The sport itself is very reasonable with fees for those under 11 costing around $140 for the year, and Horton shares another benefit is no specialized gear is required.

"It is very cheap, the equipment is very cheap to buy as well. You just need a mouthguard and a pair of cleats."

Horton shares with rugby being highlighted in the Olympics this year, it has brought a local awareness to the sport.

"It's getting more and more popular in Northern America, there are various different leagues setting up now. I think people are slowly seeing there are other alternatives and cheap alternatives, and I think a lot of kids find rugby fun."

Horton shares for those considering to join, rugby, has many benefits.

"Concentration, the strategic elements of the game means kids have to use their brains to pick up all the rules. There is enjoyment, most of our kids come off the field with smiles on their faces. It teaches respect for opponents, referees, and for your teammates- which is quite a big thing within rugby all over the world. The big thing is teamwork, it teaches you social skills, team spirit, and cooperation."
