As the temperature continues to drop here in Cochrane, we are not the only thing suffering through the cold. Our vehicles not only have a hard time starting at this temperature, but it is also hard on the overall performance of your car.

Erol Yersel, owner of Erol’s Automotive says that the cold weather can cause several problems that make your car not start. “The battery loses its reserve charge, loses electricity and the ability to crank your engine over. The oil is thick, think of malaises and put it outside and see how it pours. That’s the same as your car’s engine oil. When it’s cold it thickens up and it’s really hard to spin it around and move things through it”

Erol says that there are ways to prevent your car from freezing up “Get a block heater and plug your car in. Keeps some warmth in your engine, keeps the oil thin and the engine warmer and lets it start much better”

“If you are parked outside and can’t plug it in, make sure you have a good battery and make sure your car is fully tuned up”
