A big win is sought Thursday night (Jan. 9) that won't register on the scoreboard for local high school basketball teams.

The annual Hoops for a Cure fundraiser is being held during two games being played between Cochrane and Bow Valley High junior and senior basketball teams at Cochrane High. The juniors game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the seniors.

Proceeds from raffles, half-time shooting games, and admission will all be donated to the Kids Cancer Care Society.

Spectators are also encouraged to wear purple or pink to show their support for people fighting courageous battles against cancer.

Alexandria Zeckenstedt, of the organizing committee, says they're hoping to draw a huge crowd for the annual event.

"We're hoping to have an awesome turnout this year and get the student body and community behind this event," says Zechenstedt.

They hope to at least match the $800 raised last year.

Hoops for a Cure is also about awareness, she says.

"Awareness is a huge part of this event, especially because cancer touches everybody," she says. "So we're hoping to raise awareness in the community."

Also serving on the organizing committee are Teaghan Duffee, Quynn Kuzyk, and Denayah Godlien. Together they are keeping alive an event first organized in 2014 when school multi-sport athlete Brock Wiebe was diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma

The Kids Cancer Care fundraiser was continued for several years by his sister, T. J. while she attended Cochrane High.
