Supporters of UCP candidate Peter Guthrie continually flowed through the doorways for the opening of his election headquarters late yesterday afternoon here in Cochrane.

Volunteers were stepped forward while the Guthrie team worked to add finishing touches for a provincial election that come at any time now. Guthrie was in high demand throughout the room to discuss issues and welcomed the offers of help.

From the moment the doors open, people flowed into Guthrie's election headquarters. Information was offered at the front and people were eager to volunteer.Speculation on when the Notley Government will drop the rite ran rampant and while many believe it will be triggered by the Mar. 18 Throne Speech, there was no real consensus. One thing is certain; when the call comes the Guthrie campaign will hit the ground running.

Aspiring to be the first MLA in the newly-formed Airdrie-Cochrane constituency, Guthrie's campaign has been in full swing since he secured the nomination in late October.

"We're pretty engaged," says Guthrie. "We're out there door knocking. A lot of the places we are hitting now we've been to at least once before, sometimes twice before, so this is our second and third time around meeting people in the constituency. We're really starting to get to know people in the constituency and we're also getting some great feedback. It's nice to see we have a good crowd here today."

A lot of hands are needed to run a campaign. Guthrie anticipates they will need 80 to 100 people to fill the numerous tasks involved, from scrutineering to doorknocking, posting election signs and providing transportation. Now they've added manning the headquarters office to the list.

"The requirements are heavy so we've been out engaging people, trying to get them involved in the process and because of the circumstances in the province economically there's a lot of people interested in helping," says Guthrie.

Eighty-one UCP candidates recently gathered for a general meeting weekend and Guthrie left with a positive vibe.

"We realized by the end of that weekend that our team is ready and raring to go. We're prepared; we want it to happen."

Exactly when is the question but in the meantime, Guthrie and his team will continue to talk to constituents and hold special events.

"We really don't know when, we're just going to be ready and prepared for it."

Located in the Del-Tek Building, 122 Railway St., the Guthrie headquarters will be open in the afternoons and early evenings for now and those hours will be expanded when the election has been called.

An election can be called anytime, but no later than May 31.
