The Cochrane Cobras junior girls basketball team is starting off the season on a high note.

The Cobras took a 66-16 win in their first league game over Bert Church on December 14.

Doug Jenson, Cochrane High, Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Coach, says the team had a slow start but progressed as the game went on.

"We had a bit of a slopy first quarter offensively. We had a number of turnovers and couldn't hit a number of shots, but we cleaned that up as the game progressed."

Jenson adds the Cobras defense played strong right from the start.

"They were really focused on improving and making sure that they were playing within our offense. Also, being able to make smart decisions as individuals by reading their defense and making good choices as to whether or not they should go to the hoop or continue with their offense."

The Cobras varsity girls basketball team also proved to be quite the competitors in their game against Bert Church on December 14.

Randy Peron, Cochrane High, Varsity Girls Basketball Head Coach, says they were a little unsure in the first quarter but with some changes, they managed to close the gap.

"We were a little nervous and Bert Church ended up taking a ten point lead going into the second quarter. After I made some adjustments on defense, we started to slowly take the momentum away from Bert Church. "

After the third quarter the Cobras were only 2 points behind but weren't able to catch up in the forth.

"Unfortunately, we weren't able to tie the game. They ended up getting a hoop with ten seconds left in the game and ended up winning by four."

The final score of the game was 52-48 for Bert Church.
