On the strength of a five-game winning streak, the Cochrane Generals have sole possession of second place in the south division of the Heritage Junior Hockey League.

The Gens dominated the Strathmore Wheatland Kings last night, 7-1, at the Cochrane Arena. They scored seven goals before the Kings got their lone marker with eight minutes remaining.

Linemates Dean Olenyk and Patrick Forde accounted for 11 points in Sunday's game. Five of Oleynk's six points came on assists. Forde scored two and assisted on three.

That's the most points either have scored in a single game with the Gens.

While he has plenty of scoring talent, Olenyk has made a habit of wearing his "lucky" bowtie to the games. He racked up some points in the first game he wore it, and hasn't looked back.

"Honestly, the first game I wore it, I put up some points. I've been wearing it ever since," he says.

Olenyk and Forde are neck-and-neck in scoring. Olenyk has 44 points, and Forde has 42. Both have scored 18 goals.

Just behind them is point-man Ryan Davis. He has been a threat from the outside all season and proved it once again last night with a hat-trick.

Justin Berube and Takuro Okada both had a two-point night, with a goal and assist. Carter Cugnet rounded out the scoring.

Rookie goalie Jordan Lott was on his way to his third shut out of the season when one slipped over his glove Lott has appeared in 10 games, has eight wins, and a 1.50 GAA.

When the Gens went up 7-0 with 11 minutes remaining, you could sense both teams just wanted to call it a night.

Gens assistant coach Erik Krigel says by then the Kings were worn out.

"We outplayed them all game. They looked a little beat up, a little tired, and I believe they were missing a top-end guy, which might have deflated them a little bit."

It was a different story Friday night.

The Gens came out flat against the High River Flyers, and it wasn't until late in the game they found their form. Down 6-4 early in the third, they rallied with three goals for a 7-6 win.

That performance fuelled a team meeting before Sunday night's game.

"We had a mandatory team meeting before the game today to let the boys know what we wanted to work on, and what definitely has to change to move forward to be able to string some wins together to keep second place before the playoffs," says Krigel.

This weekend, the Gens have a home-and-home series against the Lomond Lakers. They play Friday night in Claresholm and here on Saturday.

The Gens end their regular season with four tough games in early February. Three are against south division rivals and the other is against the HJHL defending champion Airdrie Techmation Thunder.
