Little ones who aren't quite old enough to use a bike with pedals will have the opportunity to try out the local track, and get to know the sport of BMX at the Cochrane BMX Club's strider race.

Brad Christensen, Cochrane BMX Club President, says the tots will get to see first hand what BMX is all about.

"We'll have our regular race nights at well starting at 7, so the kids will get to watch the regular races go as scheduled and that will give them an idea of what the sport is all about," he explains. "Then they'll get to have a couple laps on the track, and give it a try themselves. It's a lot of fun seeing those little ones go on their strider bikes."

Christensen says using a strider bike, or run bike, from an early age has benefits.

"It's a tiny little bike with no pedals, so it helps the kids learn balance before they move onto a bike with pedals, it's a good way to get them on a pedal bike faster."

Anyone is welcome to come participate, Christensen is hoping for a least a dozen striders.

There are a few things to keep in mind before your future BMX star hits the track.

"Make sure when they get to the track they come to the office, we'll get all the waivers signed away. Make sure they have a helmet, any bike helmet will do.Try to cover up as much skin as possible, no sandals, long pants, long shirt, and little gloves if they have them, we do have some they can borrow if they don't. The more skin covered, the better, just in case they do have a tumble."

Parents must also bring their own strider, and can be out on the track behind their child during the race.

The BMX Club will host its first strider bike event of the year on Wednesday, July 20 at 7 p.m.
