If you commute from Cochrane and Calgary pretty often, and you need to fuel up this week, it may be a good idea fill up here in town, rather than in the city.

As of Tuesday Cochrane gas stations were averaging 91.9/L, far more expensive than Calgary which was as low as 83.9/L, however, the Calgary prices could see a dramatic increase soon.

Dan McTeague, Senior Petroleum Analyst with GasBuddy Canada, says Calgary could be hit with a large price increase, as some gas stations are currently selling fuel at a loss.

"If you're getting it for below 90 today, you're likely to see a change upwards of anywhere from 4 to 12 cents a litre," he says. "Some prices for gasoline in places like Calgary have dipped to levels that are even below what it costs a gas station to buy the fuel. Those markets are likely to see a pretty dramatic increase at the pumps in the next day or so."

Some gas stations in the city were buying fuel for 86.9/L on Tuesday, yet offering retail prices at 85.9/L. McTeague says this is due to small retailers trying to match big box store prices.

"Big box stores often sell gasoline at a loss, they use gasoline as a hook, or loss leader for people to come in and buy other goods that have actual profit margins."

This loss leader effect is not being felt in Cochrane, so as prices begin to rise in Calgary, we should stay about the same.

"Here in Cochrane we're at 91.9, which is about a 5 cent retail margin. We're right on the edge between 91,92, or 93 cents a litre. I think it's safe to say you probably won't see much in the way of a price change"

It also may be wise to hold off on filling your tank for a few extra days, as Canada switches to a much cheaper to make, winter blend gasoline on Sept. 15, which may keep more money in your pocket.
