The holiday season is upon us and the temptation of great food and good drinks is all around.

Kim Brochu, Fitness on the Go, Owner/ Fitness Trainer, says everything in moderation.

"Enjoy the treats, enjoy the drinks, but limit the amount. We all know the difference between two cookies and maybe 12 cookies. Also always drinking lots of water if you are drinking alcohol. I think people over estimate how much water they drink, women need two litres a day, and men need four litres a day."

Brochu adds don't skip meals in preparation of eating a larger meal later that day, all it does is sets you up to eat bigger portions later on, and throwing you off track.

When it comes to watching calories be careful on those specialty themed drinks.

"Whether alcoholic drinks or drinks from cafes, a lot of them have a lot of added sugar, whip cream, flavours that are often artificial."

Don't spend a month of overindulging and not moving; Brochu says, you don't need to wait until the clock strikes 12 on January 1 to strive for a healthy 'you'.

"Start now, there's no point in waiting. We all have able bodies that are able to move every single day, there is always time to work out. So the quicker you get started the quicker you'll feel better. All it takes is 10 minutes, you can do a circuit at home; a body weight circuit like squats, push ups, lunges, planks, any type of core work."

Keeping fit as a family is also important. Whether going for a walk, snowshoeing, or tobogganing; not only are you getting fresh air but leading by example.

"If we are setting the example of having a healthy lifestyle, they will just follow by nature. Kids are active by nature so if we set the example it just encourages them that much more."

If you keep yourself in check this holiday season, the New Year, 'New You' won't be so daunting.
