Marlaina Danielle Smith is now Alberta's 19th premier.

Smith was officially sworn into office this morning, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at Government House in Edmonton just after 11 a.m.

Once the official swearing-in was completed by 19th Lt. Gov. Salma Lakhani, Smith made her first address as Alberta Premier.

Smith thanked her husband, David, and family and claimed without their support would not be where she is today.

The premier touted Alberta's attributes saying twice for emphasis, "There's just so much opportunity."

Freedom was a word that was repeated in the speech. "I will ensure as head of this government that those rights and freedoms are protected and will never be taken for granted, again." Smith also invited all Canadians to partner with Alberta.

Smith admitted there is a lot of work to do and ended her acceptance speech with a promise, "I will ensure that I will work every day to earn your trust."

One of the tasks ahead for the new premier is to gain a seat in the legislature. She will attempt to win a seat in the Brooks-Medicine Hat byelection following that riding's MLA, Michaela Frey's resignation on Friday.
