Nineteen years after the Twin Towers fell in the 9/11 attacks on September 11, 2001 the tragedy is marked by memorials around the globe. Here in Cochrane, the 5th Annual 9/11 Memorial Workout was held at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. There were two workouts held at 9:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. The workout was open to everyone and is strongly supported by local EMS members. The workout consists of 412 repetition circuits to commemorate the 412 emergency workers that lost their lives on September 11th.

Chris Chyka, with Cochrane Fire Services says it is so important to remember the sacrifice the EMS workers made on that fateful day nineteen years ago.

He says remembering is, "Vital for us. When the call comes in, we get initial information on what it possibly could be, but we never know until we get there how it's going to play out. On that particular day, none of those guys set out to never go home again. They were going there to help people in those towers and as they were heading there they just didn't realize what they were coming into. We don't want to forget that type of sacrifice."

Of course this year's workout was a little bit different due to COVID 19, but the overall response and support for the event was good. Attendance of the 9/11 Memorial Workout proves that the memory of that day remains strong here in Cochrane and has not faded even after the passage of 19 years.
