The Football Alberta Summer Series is being held on July 18 in Red Deer that will see several Cochrane players hit the field.

A total of five games are being hosted at the Great Chief Park for U16 to U18 players. Selection camps were held across the province two weeks ago that attracted 800 players.

Training camps are now underway, and teams report to Red Deer on Sunday.

Cochrane players were selected for four teams.

On the U16 Calgary Metro Dinos from Cochrane is Fauth Bennett, of the Cochrane Lions, and  Tyson Northcott, of the Calgary Hilltoppers. On the Calgary Metro Colts is William Jackson, of Cochrane, who plays for the Calgary Mavericks, and Calgarian Jake Cunningham, who plays for the Lions.

On the U17 South team is receiver Ethan Clazie, defensive back Tate Pickard, and linebacker Jackson Knox. Quarterback Christian Golem plays for Cochrane but is from Calgary.

Offensive lineman Jacob Patterson and defensive back Adam Jackson are on the U18 South team.

Football Alberta executive director Tim Enger says the series was created to allow players who signed up for their provincial level programming in January a chance to compete.

It's especially important in a year where there isn't a Football Canada Cup for U18s, Pacific Challenge for U17s, and Alberta Summer Games for U16s.

"We had our U18s compete in a tryout camp, which they normally did, the same thing with the U17 and U16, and set up almost a Senior Bowl north versus south game for the top two age divisions. Then for the U16s, we would have had a lot of teams at the Alberta Summer Games, so we selected six teams to play off against each other."

He says Red Deer was chosen to host the games because it's central to the province, and they wanted to keep costs down for the players. He says the Great Chief Park is a great venue that was renovated for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Tickets are available at the gate and are $10/adult, $5/student, under 12 free, and are good for the whole day. Cochrane players are involved in four of the five games.
