Four BMX riders from Cochrane walked away with double gold medals after Provincial Races 5 and 6 in Airdrie over the weekend.

Katie Scott, 13 Expert Female, Luke Christensen, 11 Intermediate Male, Nathan Vlahakis, 7 Expert Male, Ayden Schumlick, 13 Novice Male all managed to win first in their categories on both Saturday and Sunday.

Brad Christensen, Cochrane BMX Club President says it was an incredible weekend.

"I'm still smiling, thinking about the weekend and how our kids did," he says. "BMX is such a tough sport both physically and emotionally, so to see some of our riders overcome the hard crashes, or bad gates, or a slipped pedal during a race, they came out and competed every single time. Every time you see one of our kids ride out there, they're gold medal winners in my eyes."

Christensen adds the weekend was not only a success for Cochrane, but for the sport of BMX as a whole.

"We had a record number of riders for Saturday and Sunday for the Provincial Races, I think we had over 540 riders in total from across the province show up. That is the record race for a provincial for BMX, so it was a really impressive weekend."

Cochrane had about 42 riders compete on both Saturday and Sunday.

Provincial Races 7 and 8 will be held in Stoney Plain on August 13 and 14.
