A pair of wins over the weekend has seen the Cochrane Chaos junior female team expand upon their lead in the south division of the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFHL).

Friday night, they downed the Lethbridge Eagles, 4-1, then notched a 7-1 win over the Sherwood Park Steele on Sunday.

"Those two games were a test for us," says Chaos head coach Derek Loomer. "We've been going head-to-head with the Eagles for the top place in our division all year. They beat us early in the season, and I think our girls wanted to get them back. I thought we took control of the game and never really gave them a chance to be in it."

He says Sunday's game against the Steele was close until the third.

"Our four lines and our depth just took over, wore down the Sherwood Park team, and got four goals in the third to finish it off."

He says Sunday afternoon games can be challenging, especially after getting the job done Friday night.

"Mentally, it's a challenge to get back to the level you were at, but I think our girls did a really good job of being prepared right from the first drop of the puck."

Still, he says it's early in the season.

"We know we can be better. I think the thing that's good for us is we know that there are still some improvements we can make to our game. We come to practice and challenge each other every week to be better."

"We have a Christmas break coming up in a couple of weeks. Then it's a question of how we come back from that and build as we head into the end of February, where the games really matter."

The Chaos found themselves behind the Eagles early in the season. Now they have a five-point lead. They also have two points on the top team in the north division, the Lakeland Rustlers, a team they have beaten twice.

This weekend, the Chaos are on a northern swing to face the Fort Saskatchewan Fury and Edmonton Wolves.

The Wolves beat them earlier in the season, and Loomer believes getting a win against them on the road is important.

"The last couple of times we were destined to play them in the north-south final. If we're good enough and lucky enough to be there again, it would be nice to beat them once and have that confidence going into the playoffs."

The Chaos have a 15-2 record and are on an eight-game winning streak.
