Most Cochranite's are familiar with the annual highway cleanup that typically happens in the spring. Naturally, due to COVID 19 the cleanup was postponed and is scheduled to take place Saturday, September 19 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Locally, you will see volunteers along Highway 22 north of Cochrane to Cremona and also on Highway 574 east of Highway 22 to Highway 772.

Motorists are encouraged to watch for volunteers wearing bright orange safety vests collecting trash along highways. The endeavour is undertaken by mostly youth accompanied by adults to raise funds for community organizations. Such organizations include 4-H Clubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, schools, church organizations and other non-profit organizations. They will earn $100 per kilometre that is cleaned.

Last year, saw 18,000 volunteers collect more than 56,000 bags of garbage along 13,700 kilometres of Alberta highways while earning $1.28 million that was distributed to 740 volunteer organizations.

Motorists are urged to be extra vigilant on Saturday and watch for volunteers, and ensure you slow down, obey signs, and use extra caution when passing the cleanup crews.
